Dental Care

Canine and feline dental cleanings are an inpatient procedure because they require the animal to be anesthetized. After the anesthesia is administered, the tartar is chipped off the teeth and each tooth is checked for mobility to help determine if any extractions are needed. Then the teeth are polished. The cleaning is followed by digital radiographs of the patients mouth to check for any problems below the gum line. If extractions are needed, the veterinarian does them at this time. Most dental patients wake up shortly after the procedure and are able to go home that afternoon. Depending on the condition of the mouth and the number of extractions, the patient may be prescribed antibiotics and pain medication.
